Merschman, McIntyre and Fredriksen-Holm qualify for state at sections

Feb. 7—BEMIDJI — Taylor Merschman is a section champion once again.

The Bemidji High School junior girls wrestler won the 106-pound bracket at the Section 8 Finals in Sartell on Saturday. Merschman beat Monticello's Phoebe Morris in a 9-5 decision in the section title match.
Merschman advanced to the championship match with a pin over Moorhead's Tia Kanneh in 3:33. Merschman will wrestle at state for the third consecutive season. She took fifth place at state as a freshman and fourth as a sophomore.
Two other Lumberjacks will join her. Brenalen Fredriksen-Holm took second place at 112 pounds, while Mercy McIntyre finished runner-up at 235 pounds.
Fredriksen-Holm advanced to the section title match with a 12-1 major decision win over Sauk Centre/Melrose's Monroe Anderson. However, she was pinned by Montocello's Roselane Verrett in 4:21 to finish in second.
The top two from each weight class qualify for state. Fredriksen-Holm, a junior, will make her third state appearance Feb. 25-26 at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul. She took fifth place at state as a freshman two years ago.
McIntyre, another junior, will be a first-time state participant. After beating Delano's Aalliyah Chilton by fall in 3:48 to advance to the 235-pound final, McIntyre lost to Sauk Centre/Melrose's Makenzey Stutzman via pin in 5:25. Neither McIntyre or Fredriksen-Holm had to wrestle for true second.
Chastity Skerik and Dezi Puffe saw their push for state bids come to an end on Saturday. Skerik finished in fifth place at 155 pounds, while Puffe claimed sixth at 118 pounds.
Holly Snobl (100 pounds), Emily Manecke (124), Annabelle Wuori (130), Patti Tooker (136), Jadyn Eichberg (142) and Emmily Main (148) all competed for BHS at sections.
