Espérance Sportive de Tunis make coaching change ahead of decisive CAF clash
Esperance have named French coach Christian Bracconi as interim head coach following Maher Kanzari’s dismissal after poor results.
Esperance turn to Bracconi in critical phase
Espérance Sportive de Tunis have officially appointed Christian Bracconi as temporary head coach replacing Maher Kanzari who was sacked due to disappointing performances.
The decision came after Esperance’s 1-0 defeat away to Stade Malien on Sunday in matchday 5 of CAF Champions League group stage.
That loss ended the Tunisian club’s hopes of finishing top of Group D increasing pressure on the management to act quickly.
Champions League qualification still in sight
Despite losing the race for first place, Esperance remain in strong position to reach CAF Champions League quarter-finals. The club will host Petro de Luanda on Saturday in final group match.
A draw is enough for Esperance to secure qualification making the match decisive moment in the club’s continental campaign.
Bracconi will take charge of the team for this crucial fixture as confirmed by the club in official statement on Facebook.
Who is Christian Bracconi?
Bracconi was born in 1960 in Constantine Algeria before moving to France during his childhood. As a player he featured for several French clubs including Bastia & Metz.
The former striker played 233 match across France’s first and second divisions scoring 33 goal.
After retiring, he moved into coaching spending most of his career working with youth teams and clubs in the lower divisions in France and Belgium.
Bracconi’s only experience in Ligue 1 came with Ajaccio where he coached 26 match recording 3 win, 7 draw and 16 defeat.
Over the past two decades, he has managed 186 match in total, with 56 wins, 56 draws and 74 losses.
Experience in transitional roles
Inside Esperance, Bracconi is known for his close relationship with former Algeria captain Anthar Yahia who played a key role in bringing him to the club as reserve-team coach.
According to Transfermarkt, Bracconi prefers 4-4-2 formation although he has recently shown flexibility by using 4-3-3.
His experience in short-term and transitional roles is seen as a key reason behind Esperance’s decision to trust him during this sensitive period.
Local context
Domestically Esperance remain in the Tunisian league title race sitting second with 40 point from 18 match, just two point behind Club Africain.
The coaching change is expected to bring stability as the club fights on both continental and local fronts.
