The New York Yankees traded for Ryan McMahon last July because he's an impressive third baseman.

They're now wondering whether he can add a new position to his talents.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters Wednesday that they'd like McMahon to get some reps at shortstop this spring. The idea would be that he could be a backup option there if needed.

McMahon has played three innings at shortstop in his MLB career, all in 2020.

He has also played 750 games at third base, 244 gams at second base and 70 games at first base.

McMahon was a 2024 All Star for the Rockies when he had a strong first half en route to a .722 OPS for the season.

In 2025, his combined OPS was .693. He mostly struggled once joining the Yanks.

New York had an even worse situation at third base before acquiring McMahon, though, so he'll likely have a long leash over there before the Yanks would even consider something different.

The Yankees will be without starting shortstop Anthony Volpe to begin the season due to injury. Jose Caballero will likely be the Opening Day starter.

It's not clear who would potentially play third base if McMahon played short -- maybe Amed Rosario? Regardless, Boone wants another option in his back pocket.
