Commanders re-sign former 49ers' second-round pick
· Yahoo Sports
The Washington Commanders continue to re-sign some of their internal free agents ahead of the opening of free agency next week. On Thursday, Washington re-signed defensive end Drake Jackson to a one-year deal. Jackson, a second-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in the 2022 NFL Draft, suffered a devastating knee injury in 2023, which cost him nine games that season and all of 2024.
The 49ers waived Jackson after the 2025 NFL Draft, and the Commanders signed him in October and immediately placed him on injured reserve. Washington GM Adam Peters was the 49ers' assistant GM when Jackson was drafted and kept tabs on his recovery. The Commanders activated Jackson from injured reserve on December 4, and he appeared in three games, registering three tackles.

The 6-foot-4, 273-pound Jackson is still only 24 years old. He showed promise as a rookie, recording three sacks as a rookie in a part-time role. He had three sacks in eight games for San Francisco in 2023 before he was injured.
The Commanders and defensive lineman Drake Jackson reached agreement on a one-year extension, per his agent Drew Rosenhaus.

Jackson's re-signing is for depth and potential upside and will not affect the Commanders' free-agent and draft strategy. He's the third defensive lineman to re-sign this week, following Deatrich Wise and Shy Tuttle.
