A ‘very relieved’ Jon Rahm collects first victory in 18 months with Hong Kong title

Jon Rahm remains one of the best players in the world. But still, it irked him that it’s been so long since he’s won an individual title; It was September 2024 when he won LIV Golf Chicago. He was in two LIV playoffs last year, but Chicago remained the last victory.

Until Sunday in Hong Kong.

The 31-year-old Spaniard shot a final-round 64 at Hong Kong Golf Club to cruise to a three-shot win over Thomas Detry at LIV Golf Hong Kong. It was his third win with the league.

“Very relieving,” Rahm said. “That's the only way I can describe it. I've been very ecstatic for wins in the past. This one just feels like a big weight off my shoulder.”

Rahm has finished in second place in both of the first two LIV events of the year. This time, however, he left no doubt by making birdie on four of the first eight holes and then another stretch of four straight birdies on Nos. 13-16 to close the deal. A bogey on the 18th didn’t do anything to dampen Rahm’s spirits on this, his 23rd victory as a professional.

“I told myself going to the first tee, no matter what, every single step I take today, it's 100 percent committed,” Rahm said. “Whatever shot I decide, we're going to go 100 percent committed, and if I make a mistake, I make a mistake, but it won't be because I wasn't committed to the decision.

“I applied that, and luckily it worked out.”

Detry shot three-under 67 but never made a serious run. Thomas Pieters was a shot behind Detry in third place. The two Belgians are on Dustin Johnson’s 4Aces squad and their respective performances helped their team win the title and split $3 million. Anthony Kim is the fourth member of the team. He tied for 31st place at nine-under total, just a few weeks after his last event in Australia, where he won in historic fashion after taking more than a decade break from the game.

Rahm is atop the league’s season standings by a wide margin after his hot start. Elvis Smylie is second. On the team side, Cam Smith’s Ripper squad is in first ahead of the 4Aces.

LIV Golf is in a stretch of playing three consecutive weeks in three different countries. Events in Singapore and South Africa are up next.
