The New York Jets are still searching for an answer at quarterback, and there are many options they could go with.

However, it’s unlikely that they’ll look for a reunion with a player who didn’t work out the first time.

Ryan Shea of Sports Illustrated thinks otherwise and recently pitched a potential trade that would send Geno Smith from the Las Vegas Raiders back to the team that originally drafted him.

Jets acquire: Smith

Raiders acquire: 2026 7th-Round Pick

“With the Jets’ QB room unsettled, Geno Smith would likely step in as the starter or primary competitor for the job. Under new offensive coordinator Frank Reich, the Jets’ passing game could become more structured and QB-friendly, increasing Smith’s opportunities and overall passing volume,” he wrote.

Smith saved his career over the last few seasons and has proven he can run an efficient offense when surrounded by the right pieces. However, he was bad in 2025 and didn’t show much to suggest that the Jets and other teams should take a chance on him.

On the flip side, giving up a seventh-round pick for a quarterback who could start right away isn’t the worst idea. Smith has shown he can play at a high level, but last season was so bad that it likely doesn’t make sense for New York right now, even if it will be bad next year.
