The Washington Commanders received positive news on Wednesday regarding a potential deal involving a 27-year-old soon-to-be-released San Francisco 49ers wide receiver.

According to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, the Commanders are the most likely landing spot for the talented wideout.
“With the new league year set to begin today, the49ers plan to release WR Brandon Aiyuk,” Wagoner wrote on X/Twitter. “Could happen as soon as today, but certainly soon. Washington is the most likely landing spot for Aiyuk, probably on a one-year prove-it deal.”
“SF is expected to use post June 1 designation, which is why they had to wait until new league year begins. Dead cap numbers, per OverTheCap: 2026 - $13.325 million, 2027 - $21.247 million.”
“SF will also get a credit of $4.987 million toward the 2027 cap. The Niners, of course, will save significant amounts in future years by getting Aiyuk off the books.”
Aiyuk’s tenure with the San Francisco 49ers has been odd.
After two respectable seasons with the 49ers to start his NFL career, the 6-foot wide receiver recorded his first 1,000-yard receiving campaign in the big leagues (2022-23). The Arizona State product finished the year with 1,015 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.
Aiyuk was impressive in 2023-24 as well, using his ability to create separation and be a reliable vertical threat to total 1,342 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.
Things quickly went downhill for Aiyuk, though, as a devastating torn ACL/MCL injury suffered in 2024, combined with a lengthy contract dispute, ultimately led to his demise in San Francisco.
Assuming the 49ers release the former first-round pick at some point this offseason, the Commanders shouldn’t hesitate to pursue him. Aiyuk spent his senior season at Arizona State alongside Jayden Daniels and enjoyed his most productive campaign at the Division 1 level (1,192 receiving yards and eight touchdowns).
Reuniting Daniels with Aiyuk in Washington makes too much sense not to happen in free agency.
