SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The message was loud and clear.

“We’ve got a lot of places that are stuck in ‘what was.’” said new Syracuse Orange Athletic Director Bryan Blair.

Blair introduced himself to Syracuse University and the Central New York community on Thursday morning. He was officially named as the 12th athletic director in school history. And he knows that “attacking revenue generation and NIL” is what is going to bring success to Syracuse. Blair emphasized the importance of NIL clearly.

“We’ve got to modernize our enterprise,” said Blair. “If we don’t have talented student athletes, and we can’t win and be competitive, we can’t drive the commercial enterprise to feed this entire ecosystem.”

He left no room for argument or discussion in the matter. It’s the kind of statement that fans want to hear, especially with rumors criticizing the current available financial resources for the Syracuse athletic department. It’s that focus in fundraising and NIL that gave the search committee and Chancellor-elect Mike Haynie the confidence to hire Blair.

“We need an athletic director who will shape the moment and candidly bend that moment to our will,” said Haynie. “And that’s who Bryan Blair is.”

It’s not just the fundraising and NIL success at Toledo, where Blair was previously athletic director, that makes him an attractive hire for Syracuse. His record of success both on the playing field and in the classroom for student-athletes was mentioned. Blair’s ability to garner the support of the local community to support all athletic programs was mentioned as well.

Perhaps equally as important is Blair’s connection to his family. With the emphasis of family in some of Syracuse’s latest coaching hires, Blair showcased that the familial aspect of his life was just as equally important. He spent a large portion of the beginning of his introduction thanking his mom, dad, wife and kids for their lessons and support.

However, for some Syracuse fans, the time to wait is over. The search committee and Haynie noted that in an ideal world, an athletic director hire would have happened over the summer, when Haynie was officially Chancellor and fully settled into his role at the head of the University.

But given the timing of recent events, most notably the retirement of former AD John Wildhack and the firing of men’s basketball coach Adrian Autry, an athletic director hiring had to be made quickly. Haynie was announced as Syracuse Chancellor-elect on Tuesday, March 3. Nine days later, Blair was announced as Syracuse’s AD.

Blair’s speciality is fundraising. He grew fundraising at Toledo by 282% since he became its AD in 2022. Financial resources is an area where fans have been concerned that Syracuse is not keeping up compared to the rest of the ACC programs. Blair knows that he’ll need to put in the work, meet members of the community, and talk to them to get where Syracuse aims to be financially.

“We want to provide a clear, compelling vision that gets people excited,” said Blair. “People want to give to something bold, something ambitious. We’re going to give them that.”

Blair knows that Syracuse isn’t in the position it wants to be in financially compared to not just the ACC, but the Power Four conferences as well. His experience at smaller schools like Toledo has already given him the ability to be creative in making what’s available work.

“We had to out maneuver and out strategize our opponents many times,” said Blair. I don’t want that to always be the case in Syracuse.”

All of the financial goals that Blair has set out come back to one thing. That is bringing a winning product back to Syracuse. Blair’s first immediate job to bring that winning back to the Orange is to hire a men’s basketball coach. He mentioned that Wildhack had started a preliminary list of candidates and they’re both working on evaluating that list and determining if they need to look outside of it.

It all comes back to the history of Syracuse for Blair. He was a history major at Wofford College, where he played defensive line for its football program. Blair said that he believed that history has a way of “replicating itself over time.” He spoke to the brand power that Syracuse’s Block “S” has held over time. And the message, once again, was clear about his intentions.

“We want to wake the sleeping beast.”
