The City of Cape Town said the work forms part of its ongoing water infrastructure maintenance programme, including pipe repairs, valve replacements, new connections and pressure testing.

Residents in affected areas are advised to store enough water in clean, sealed containers ahead of time.

Water disruptions from 23 to 27 March

The broadest planned maintenance event is the Voëlvlei Water Treatment Plant shutdown, which will run from 08:00 on Monday, 23 March until 24:00 on Wednesday, 25 March. While the City says reservoirs will be filled in advance, residents and businesses in Durbanville, Philadelphia, Fisantekraal and Klipheuwel are being asked to reduce water use during this period.

Other planned shut-offs include:

  • Camps Bay / Bakoven: The Meadway Avenue, from 10:00 to 12:00 on Tuesday, 24 March
  • Philippi: New Eisleben Road between Govan Mbeki Drive and Bristol Road, including the shopping mall and surrounding roads, from 11:00 to 13:00 on Tuesday, 24 March for assessment, and again from 09:00 to 16:00 on Thursday, 26 March for a new connection
  • Ndabeni: Oude Molen Street and possibly surrounding roads, from 10:00 to 12:00 on Tuesday, 24 March for assessment, and again from 09:00 to 16:00 on Thursday, 26 March for the installation of a control valve
  • Luzuko Park, Philippi: from 09:00 to 11:00 on Tuesday, 24 March for assessment, and then from 21:00 on Thursday, 26 March until 05:00 on Friday, 27 March
  • Oranjezicht: Upper Orange Street, Alexander Avenue, Montrose Avenue and possible surrounds, from 08:00 to 18:00 on Tuesday, 24 March
  • Eureka Estate, Elsies River: the area bounded by Owen Road, 42nd Avenue, Connaught Road and 35th Street, from 09:00 to 18:00 on Wednesday, 25 March
  • Steenberg: the area bounded by Salem Way, Powell Road, Allenby Drive, Military Road and possible surrounds, from 09:00 to 19:30 on Thursday, 26 March
  • Kleinvlei, Somerset Heights, Spandau, Park Village, Forest Glade, Rosedale and Perm Gardens: from 08:00 to 18:00 on Thursday, 26 March
  • Kommetjie: the area north of Wireless Road and possible surrounds, from 15:00 on Thursday, 26 March until completion

The City said most of these areas will have no water during the above shutdown periods.

Water pressure tests may affect more areas

In addition to shut-offs, zero-pressure tests and conditional assessments are scheduled for:

  • Parow and Elsies River: from 09:00 to 16:00 on Tuesday, 24 March
  • Bellville South: the area bounded by Robert Sobukwe Drive, Kasselsvlei Road, Industry Road, Kosmos Street and possible immediate surrounds, from 09:00 to 16:00 on Tuesday, 24 March
  • Surrey Estate and Gugulethu: from 09:00 to 16:00 on Wednesday, 25 March

The City warned that in these areas, some residents may experience low water pressure, while others may have no water at all.

“Residents are advised to store enough water in advance as a precautionary measure,” the City said.

Water tankers will be made available in some areas, including Luzuko Park, while tankers will also supply Eerste River Hospital and the Kleinvlei Day Hospital during repairs in the Eerste River supply zone.

“This work forms part of the City’s Water Demand Management Strategy,” the City said in a statement.

“Managing water pressure more effectively reduces the possibility of pipe bursts and water wastage. The City sincerely regrets any inconvenience.”
