The Los Angeles Lakers are starting to look like a dangerous team with a real chance to make a deep playoff run. Los Angeles is right where LeBron James has wanted them to be all along.
“LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” Rich Paul told ESPN. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.”
James is uncertain about what lies ahead beyond this season. If he chooses to play another year, Bronny James earning more minutes could help persuade him to re-sign.
“The path of least resistance involves both James as members of the Lakers next season. That would, of course, involve a lot of sacrifice on LeBron's part. The aging forward would almost certainly need to take a pay cut and perhaps even lessen his role with the team more than what he already has. That could be the trade-off for getting to run the bench unit minutes with Bronny in 2026-27. If Bronny continues on the upward trend everyone is noticing over his first two years with the Lakers, that could be a regular occurrence for the pair in 2026-27. It gives LeBron yet another thing to mull over before making his (final) decision in the summer,” Lake Show Life’s Syvatoslav Rovenchuk wrote.
If that isn’t enough, family considerations could also play a major role in his decision.
“You might be thinking that it wouldn't be hard for his wife and daughter to either move across the state to San Francisco or across the country for just one season, but maybe he wouldn't want to disrupt his daughter's life in that way. She goes to school and plays volleyball in LA. Staying in Los Angeles, where he could still live with Savannah and Zhuri and attend his daughter's events when he's able, could be enough to get him to re-sign with the Lakers. That's without factoring in Bronny and Bryce. The latter is redshirting his first year at Arizona, so assuming he stays with the Wildcats next season, staying on the West Coast would allow LeBron to catch more of his games,” Lake Show Life’s Jordanna Clark wrote.
The Lakers are preparing for a significant offseason as they continue to build toward sustained success. Austin Reeves will be a major priority, and if James decides to return for another season, he will be as well.
James has plenty of reasons to remain in Los Angeles beyond this year. Ultimately, his decision may come down to family—whether it’s staying close to home or continuing to share the court with Bronny as he grows into his role.
