On Friday afternoon, the Toronto Blue Jays took on the Chicago White Sox for their first road match of the season, following their opening two series back at the Rogers Centre.

Despite trailing the White Sox, 1-3 after the third inning, the Blue Jays would mount a comeback in the bottom of the eighth inning, on the back of an Andres Gimenez home run that plinked off the foul pole in right field.

This would put the game on course to go into extra innings, which was when Toronto faced a new challenge, as Alejandro Kirk was taken off the field after his left hand was hit by a foul ball. Kirk ended the afternoon going one for four from the batter’s box with an RBI to his name.

This would almost immediately impact Toronto, as in the same half inning, Kirk’s replacement, Tyler Heineman, threw a bouncing ball to first that got passed Vladimir Guerrero Jr, allowing Chicago to tie the game 4-4.

The White Sox would walk it off due to a Tristan Peters’ single.

What’s the latest on Kirk’s injury?

Given that Kirk went into the locker room in the same half inning that the game wrapped up, there wasn’t much more information available during the media interviews. However, according to Hazel Mae, the Mexican catcher is slated to receive X-rays.

The second match between Toronto and Chicago is set to take place on Saturday afternoon, which means that Blue Jays’ manager John Schneider may have to look elsewhere to fill in the backstop, which could lead him to the aforementioned Heineman, but in the long term he could look elsewhere.

According to Mae, Schneider isn’t opposed to using Brandon Valenzuela for the foreseeable future if the 27-year-old is to miss some time. Valenzuela is currently with Toronto’s Triple-A affiliate, the Buffalo Bisons, slashing .200/.294/.400 across his four appearances.

In the meantime, Saturday afternoon’s match between the Blue Jays and White Sox is slated to begin at 2:10 p.m. EST.
