Mumbai Cyber Crime Cases Surge Sharply In 2026, Credit Card Fraud Tops

Mumbai: Statistics provided by the Mumbai police have revealed that there has been a significant increase in registration of cyber-crime cases this year as compared to the cases registered last year. In the first two months 952 cyber-crime cases were registered in the city as compared to the 715 cases registered last year during the same period. Maximum cases registered this year were related to credit/debit card online fraud followed by share market investment fraud and online investment fraud. Out of 952 cases, only 120 cases were detected and 107 persons were arrested in these cases.

The police have classified online cheating cases in 13 different categories. In January and February this year, 569 online cheating cases were registered, out of which maximum were related to share market investment fraud (118), followed by investment fraud (42), fake website fraud (31), cheating by posing as government officials (28), job fraud (28), online purchase fraud (16), loan fraud (15), custom/gift fraud (07) and crypto-currency fraud (04) and matrimonial fraud (02). The police have detected 57 out of 569 cases and have arrested 60 persons for their alleged involvement in these offences.

Apart from online cheating cases, this year the police have registered 199 credit/debit card online fraud cases, followed by fake social media profile/ morphing email/ sms (39), obscene email/sms/mms/post (30), hacking (27), phishing /mim attack/ spoofing mail (15), and pornography (02) and tampering of source code (01) cases.

A closer analysis of statistics revealed that cases such as phishing /mim attack/ spoofing mail, pornography, fake social media profile/ morphing email/ sms, credit/debit card online fraud, hacking, fake website fraud, investment fraud, loan fraud, communal post have seen increasing trend this year, as compared to the cases registered last year, while cases of purchase fraud, obscene email/sms/mms/post, customs/gift fraud, job fraud, insurance/ provident fund fraud, online admission fraud, share market investment fraud, matrimonial fraud, crypto-currency fraud, cheating by posing as government officials, data theft and sextortion have seen decreasing trend this year.

According to the police, several efforts are being taken by the police to promptly register cyber-crime cases. "The government and police also create awareness about cyber crimes through social media and warn them about emerging and ongoing cyber crimes," said a police officer.
