While the opening day roster is always a hot topic of conversation, it's easy to forget that it's not set in stone. Just six games into the season, the Boston Red Sox are reportedly making moves on the pitching side.

According to Chris Cotillo, the Red Sox are calling up both Zack Kelly and Tyler Uberstine to the active roster. Garrett Whitlock is set to go on paternity leave, and Johan Oviedo is being placed on the injured list with a right elbow strain to make room.
Kelly, 31, posted a 4.58 ERA over 35 1/3 innings in 2025. He's been up and down between Triple-A Worcester and the majors since 2022, but is hoping to find a permanent role in the Red Sox's bullpen. He threw five different pitches that graded out above average by Stuff+ in 2025, but hasn't been able to locate effectively enough to avoid damage.
Uberstine has never pitched in the major leagues, but made some noise in spring training. His four-seam fastball posted a whiff rate just under 40%, despite only averaging 93 mph. The Red Sox added him to the 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft this winter, and believe he could be a contributor at the major league level.
Kelly's thrown three innings in the minors this season, allowing one hit and striking out two. He most recently pitched on Wednesday, so he should be available for Friday's contest. Uberstine threw four innings as a starter on Saturday and figures to be in a long relief role.
