Not many would have predicted the best FA Cup quarterfinal of the season to be West Ham United's home game with Leeds United on Easter Sunday.

Saturday's play saw Manchester City thrash Liverpool, Chelsea destroy lower-league Port Vale, and Premier League leaders Arsenal lose 2-1 at Championship side Southampton. And yet, the real drama took place at London Stadium a day later.
Nuno Espirito Santo's team looked dead and buried against Leeds only to mount a dramatic comeback and take the game into extra time. What followed was a remarkable half-hour: goals were disallowed, shots hit the post, and West Ham turned to a 20-year-old goalkeeper for the decisive moments, including a penalty shootout.

What happened in West Ham vs. Leeds game?
Leeds had appeared to be cruising into the last four of the FA Cup after taking a 2-0 lead into second-half injury time. Many of the West Ham fans seemed to think the same — the stands were emptying as the match went into the closing stages.
Ao Tanaka's terrific piece of skill and finish after 26 minutes put the visitors in front, and despite some concerted West Ham pressure early in the second half, Dominic Calvert-Lewin doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the 75th minute after Max Kilman had fouled USMNT star Brenden Aaronson. The spot-kick was given after a VAR review.
West Ham were given a lifeline when Mateus Fernandes turned home from close range after Jarrod Bowen's shot crashed off the post, and with 11 minutes of added time signalled, it suddenly seemed the hosts had a chance. Four minutes later, Adama Traore's cross was acrobatically converted by Axel Disasi, sparking bedlam among the home supporters, many of whom had returned to the stands by this point.

Early in extra time, Taty Castellanos thought he had put West Ham in front only for a review to determine he was offside. Leeds then forced a brilliant save from Alphonse Areola amid a goalmouth scramble, and Bowen rattled the post again to give Fernandes a tap-in, only this time he was comfortably beyond the last man.
In the second half of extra time, goalkeeper Areola suffered an injury when he landed awkwardly, and untested Finlay Herrick had to come on for the final few minutes — and the penalty shootout.
Herrick saved from Joel Piroe but then watched captain Bowen see his tame effort kept out by Leeds' Lucas Perri. Perri then denied Pablo, allowing Pascal Struijk to send Leeds through to a first semifinal appearance in 39 years.

West Ham goalkeeper Finlay Herrick makes debut vs. Leeds
Areola seemed to hurt his ankle during extra time and, after receiving treatment, it became clear he could not continue.
The back-up option on the bench was Finlay Herrick, a 20-year-old who only signed professional terms with the club in July 2023.
The England youth international spent the early part of the season on loan at National League side Boreham Wood, but he was recalled by the Hammers in October 2025.
He saved the first spot-kick of the shootout from Piroe and was close to keeping out efforts from Calvert-Lewin and Wilfried Gnonto.
Who will Leeds play in the FA Cup semifinals?
The draw for the semifinals took place shortly after the game at London Stadium. The fixtures are due to be played on April 25 or 26.
How much did Axel Disasi cost West Ham?
West Ham signed Disasi on loan from Chelsea in January 2026 after the centre-back had effectively been frozen out of the first-team picture at Stamford Bridge.
The Hammers reportedly did not pay a fee for the former Monaco man, unlike Aston Villa, who gave Chelsea £5 million ($6.6m) in February 2025 for a short-term loan.
Who is Kante at West Ham?
Mohamadou Kante signed for West Ham from Paris FC in August 2024 and was loaned back to the French club for the 2024/25 season.
He did not make his Hammers debut until the 1-1 Premier League draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford on December 4, 2025.
