Hypothetical 49ers trade sends Brandon Aiyuk for 3x Pro Bowl DT
· Yahoo Sports
As news around disgruntled New York Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence's trade request circles the league, hypothetical trades for the three-time Pro Bowler will continue to pop up. Many teams should be interested in the 30.5-sack artist, but it could take a pretty penny to trade for him. Lawrence also reportedly wants $30 million a year in a new contract, per SNY.

Bleacher Report's Moe Moton broke down a few theoretical trades for Lawrence, including one that involved the 49ers. Despite the 49ers trading a third-round pick for Osa Odighizuwa, Moton had San Francisco sending a second-round pick in 2025 (No. 58), a fourth-round pick in 2025 and receiver Brandon Aiyuk to New York for Lawrence.
Perhaps San Francisco isn't done trying to revamp the unit under new defensive coordinator Raheem Morris. Keep in mind that Alfred Collins had a quiet rookie campaign, logging 17 tackles (one for loss) and a sack. With a healthy Nick Bosa and 2025 first-rounder Mykel Williams on the edge, Lawrence and Odighizuwa would round out what could be an above-average defensive line.
San Francisco could also find an opportunity to move on from Brandon Aiyuk in a trade instead of outright releasing him.
49ers owner Jed York and head coach Kyle Shanahan gave the impression that the team could keep Aiyuk, but it's difficult to envision the receiver repairing his relationship with the club amid a lack of communication.
The Giants signed wide receiver Darnell Mooney and pass-catching tight end Isaiah Likely in free agency, but they could help second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart tremendously by bringing in a talented receiver who racked up over 1,300 yards in 2023.
If Aiyuk and Malik Nabers are both healthy after suffering serious knee injuries, they could be a premier receiver tandem.
Apart from the price tag, this is a win-win trade for both sides. The 49ers get a premier interior defensive lineman to shore up their front-four and get past the Aiyuk saga, while the Giants get solid draft capital back and the possibility of another alpha receiver to pair with Nabers.
Is this a likely scenario? Probably not. The 49ers would still need to pay Lawrence a hefty extension, and there's no telling if they have the money or interest in doing so. The Giants also may not want a potential headache in Aiyuk, even if they still get two solid draft picks in the process.
It's a fun idea, and one that would result in positive momentum for the 2026 season. But it takes two to tango and we have no idea if either side is even interested in this option.
