Fresh Faces on the Forty: Freshman EDGE Jamarion Carlton

· Yahoo Sports

We have made our way to one of the most interesting prospects the Longhorns signed in this class. Texas pursued Carlton aggressively throughout the last couple of years but Baylor was able to get a commitment from the edge rusher. Texas didn’t stop pushing and were able to flip Carolton just five days before signing day and he’s now on campus in Austin. There’s a reason the Texas staff refused to take no for an answer. This is a player that can be special during his time as a Longhorn.

Highschool Stats: 154 tackles, 27 TFLs, 13 sacks, 2 FFs, 1 INT in three seasons

Carlton ranked as #6 DL in the country in this class and the #9 player in Texas, according to Rivals Industry. At nearly 6’5”, 270lbs, he brings the size needed to play an Ethan Burke type role in Will Muschamp’s defense. On top of that, his pass rush ability is incredible for his size. Carlton is truly the full package and could be the next great pass rusher at Texas in the coming years.

Now unlike Tyler Atkinson, I find it unlikely we will see Carlton in the rotation much, at least early in the season. Not only is the edge defender room one of the deepest on the Longhorns roster but Atkinson is likely further along right now compared to Carlton. Nonetheless, the Longhorns are getting someone that should factor into the “lay-up” games early in the season and hopefully as a depth piece late in 2026.

We have made our way to the section of the Longhorns recruiting class that I’ll call “the 2026 late bloomers”. I believe Carlton and a number of players we’ll talk about in the coming days might start the season slow, but flash late. Carlton is the one I believe could flash often late in the season and walk into 2027 as the talk of Austin. The length, athleticism and strong edge defender is someone I am buying stock in moving forward.

Jamarion Carlton is a name to watch throughout the 2026 season. I wouldn’t expect a remarkable freshman campaign but I do expect multiple flash plays. That also applies to the player we will cover tomorrow, Kosi Okpala. The freshman LB comes in with elite size and athleticism and would be a welcomed surprise to a thin LB room.
