Warriors' Kristaps Porzingis brushes off talk of impending free agency

· Yahoo Sports

Kristaps Porzingis is the latest addition to the Golden State Warriors roster. He was acquired at the Feb. 5 trade deadline, with Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield heading to the Atlanta Hawks as part of the deal. However, the decision to trade for Porzingis has immediately raised the question of whether Golden State will look to extend his contract.

Porzingis is currently in the final months of a two-year $60 million deal. He will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. When speaking to the media on Feb. 8, Porzingis played down talk of his impending free agency. Instead, the championship-winning big man stressed that his focus will be on helping the Warriors win at a high level.

“I don’t play into that too much," Porzingis said. "I just want to finish the year strong. It’s already a little bit up and down this season… a new team, new chapter and we see where we go.”

Porzingis has struggled with health in recent seasons. He was recently diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POSTS). However, if Golden State's medical staff can work their magic, and he remains on the court, his size, skill and rim deterrence will undoubtedly raise the team's overceiling.

At least with Porzingis focus firmly on the season at hand, he is unlikely to be distracted by talk of his future. But if he does have a strong run of games in the coming months, the Warriors front office will have a difficult decision to make on whether or not they should re-sign him.
