Spartans fall in extra innings to Illinois, drop fifth straight

A year that started with a lot of promise, has quickly shifted into a danger zone. An extra inning affair between Michigan State and Illinois went in favor of the Fighting Illini. A 5-4 win in 10 innings for Illinois delivered the Spartans their fifth consecutive loss, dropping the team to 2-5.
After two top-10 wins to open the season over Louisville, the Spartans have dropped five straight to the Cardinals, Texas (x3) and now Illinois.

Michigan State held a 3-1 advantage through seven, but a brutal eighth inning flipped the game. A three-run top half gave the Illini a lead, their first of the game. Michigan State tied the game with a one run counter in the bottom half.
It was a run in the top half of the 10th inning that proved to be too much for the Spartans to overcome, as the team went down in order in the bottom half, sealing their fate.
Michigan State will get a chance to bounce back tomorrow against Albany.
