Scholes sparked controversy after Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to 10-man Newcastle when he posted a message on Instagram appearing to mock Carrick’s recent results as manager.
The post quickly circulated online and triggered debate among supporters and former players about whether criticism from club legends has gone too far.

The Frenchman even joked that he hopes Scholes’ social media account had been hacked.
He also pointed out a potential contradiction comparing the Briton’s behaviour as a player and as a pundit.
“I hope Paul Scholes’ Instagram story is fake, I hope he was hacked. To be honest, I’m not surprised at that from Scholesy.
“He was the quietest player I’ve ever played with in my entire career. Now, in the media, he drops bombshells,” the former left-back said.
Patrice Evra also calls out Roy Keane and Gary Neville over pundit criticism
Evra also suggested the criticism surrounding Carrick has been excessive, and he went on to mention Roy Keane and Gary Neville, former Manchester United stars who also became pundits.
While acknowledging their roles in the media, he suggested criticism from former players can sometimes be easier than managing in real life.
“There’s been negative analysis from Scholesy, but also from Roy Keane and Gary Neville. It annoys me because we want to be in the top four, and those comments are unnecessary, but this is what you do when you work in TV. You can’t be positive, you have to be negative.”
He also aimed a playful jab at Neville’s managerial spell at Valencia.
“Most of these guys get a managerial job and get fired straightaway.
“I said to Neville: ‘It’s easy to talk on TV. When you were at Valencia, they asked you for paella, and you gave them fish and chips.’”
