Based on afree agency rumor involving the New York Giants, it's logical to assume Big Blue could have its eye on a Detroit Lions free agent.
The rumor comes from ESPN's Jordan Raanan, who reported that the Giants previously checked in on former Denver Broncos and new Tennessee Titans defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers.
Raanan adds that JFM was always going to be out of the Giants' price range, but he believes the simple fact that the Giants looked into the veteran suggests they are looking for help along the defensive line.
"New York at least checked in on the top interior defensive lineman in free agency, John Franklin-Myers," Raanan reported.
"And while it wasn't serious players before he signed with the Tennessee Titans for more than $20 million per season, it seems to indicate the Giants were interested in adding a player to their defensive interior."
Raanan goes on to add that the Giants are "still likely" to add upfront, whether that be in free agency, the draft, or both, and he specifically mentions a "run-stuffing presence."
It's not hard to see why the Giants want to make an addition upfront.
Aside from Dexter Lawrence, there is nothing to write home about when it comes to the rest of the position group, and that's especially true when it comes to defending against the run.
Giants could sign Lions free agent
One player available in free agency who would provide an upgrade for the Giants along the defensive line is D.J. Reader.
Reader, who played out the last year of his $22 million contract with the Lions in 2025, posted a 61.7 run defense grade last season, per Pro Football Focus.
While certainly not great, Reader has historically been better than that and his 2025 grade was miles ahead of both Darius Alexander (30.3) and Roy Robertson-Harris (50.7).
Ideally, we'd like to see the Giants double-dip along the defensive line this offseason by signing a veteran and using a draft pick at the position.
Reader would check the former box.
