The NCAA tournament selection committee was tasked with determining whether the RedHawks' near-undefeated record on a weak schedule warranted a spot in the big dance over mediocre power-conference teams. The committee decided it was, placing one-loss Miami (OH) in the tournament as an 11-seed three days after the team suffered its first loss of the season in the MAC quarterfinals.

The MAC landing two tourney teams meant one fewer power-conference hopeful, including Auburn as one of the first four out after former Tigers coach Bruce Pearl campaigned for them over Miami (OH).
